Enabling Product Innovation: The Roles of ERP and PLM in the Product Lifecycle
Companies are turning toward product innovation to achieve revenue growth, but to generate return on an innovation idea, the idea must be fully developed. When

These derivatives embody the design and extend it to serve other purposes such as sales or service. Unfortunately, the relationship between the design and the derivatives is often severed when the deliverable is created. As the design changes, the impact analysis of the change must be extended to these deliverables. If the

Product Lifecycle Management: Expediting Product Innovation

The highly competitive product manufacturing market makes true product lifecycle management (PLM) inevitable. PLM helps companies map product requirements to features, obtain control over product data, preserve product knowledge assets, and enter into the new paradigm of modular product development.

New Product Development and Introduction (NPDI)

New product development and introduction (NPDI) is probably the most important process for many companies, but also one of the least understood. While NPDI is responsible for revenues, few companies assign an owner for the whole process. Instead, it is usually driven through a series of functional “silos,” causing delay—and the loss of the original market requirements.

Project management capabilities allow projects to be managed actively with current schedule information and for formal project status reviews to be conducted periodically. Project templates for methodology-based development processes can be used to structure new projects. Managers can then define the development phases, tasks, and task hierarchies. The outputs from each phase can be used as a checklist to drive project status reviews. Read More

Vendor Articulates Message and Vision for Product Lifecycle Management

SAP has developed some crucial themes as it moves forward with their PLM vision and solution strategy. Product development lifecycles are shrinking, and managing the innovation process is becoming a broader requirement of manufacturers and retailers alike.

Key Metrics for Monitoring New Product Development

Since our research-driven beginnings, Johnson & Johnson Advanced Sterilization Products (ASP) has continually improved the new product development (NPD) process. Detailed process mapping has revealed three tiers of business metrics, starting with drivers and moving up through execution metrics to business performance metrics. When driver metrics improves, so does business performance. Six Sigma tools helps identify specific metrics at all tiers and the causality linkages among them. Each NPD process step at ASP results in a deliverable, and each deliverable relates to a trade-off triangle (cost-time-resources) and, ultimately, to investment dollars. To track performance, ASP calculates how actual NPD decisions and what-if scenarios affect deliverables, alter investment triangles, and thereby influence business results. ASP uses similar process and tools, including the investment triangles and Six Sigma QFD, to make idea management decisions. The IDweb real-time software environment enables both the NPD and idea management processes at ASP. By deploying the strategic planning, idea management, portfolio and pipeline management, process management, and resource management modules of IDweb, ASP has increased throughput by 20 percent and reduced cycle time by 40 percent.

The Product Portfolio Management Benchmark Report: Achieving Maximum Product Value

Products may fail to meet expectations for many reasons—most of which are self-inflicted wounds (such as unclear product definitions) by the company bringing them to market. What’s more, politics and inertia all too often win the day when it comes to making difficult product portfolio decisions. What actions can you take to rank among those companies which realize margin advantages of over 50 percent for new products?

Product, Project, Process, and People: The Four Ps of PLM Analytics

Product, project, process, and people represent the four areas of PLM analytics that may help PLM user organizations develop better products, improve the product development process, increase operational efficiency, and better measure employee performance, respectively.

This data not only supports daily operations but it also has the potential to help companies to better understand historical performance and predict the future, if it can be interpreted properly. In fact, reporting and analytics has been a part of some PLM offerings for a while. For instance, Siemens PLM Software has included this capability Read More

How Is a Bad Product Developed?

How to Create Compelling Product Roadmaps

Product roadmaps can mean the difference between success and failure in product delivery. Done correctly, they can help win large customers, and guide strategic planning efforts. Unfortunately, most product roadmaps are created under pressure when company management makes a last-minute request. As a result, they don’t have the impact they should, and can be a source of product management misery.
