Core PLM for Process Industries

The foundation of product lifecycle management (PLM) for the process (or recipe-based) manufacturing industries is product data management (PDM). It covers design and product-related aspects of PLM including management of material specifications, recipes, formulas, production processes, design tools, document management, and collaboration.

Aras Announces VPLM for Autodesk Vault

A week before the Autodesk University 2012 conference, Aras, a provider of enterprise-class open source product lifecycle management (PLM) software solutions, announced the launch of Aras VPLM, a commercial offering designed specifically for companies that run Autodesk Vault with Inventor for three-dimensional product design and AutoCAD for two-dimensional design. pdm racing 240sx  Autodesk has Vault for PDM on-premise, and the still nascent Autodesk PLM 360 offering in the cloud. This combination is not yet much competition against the mainstream big three PLM players (i.e., ENOVIA, Teamcenter, and Windchill) but is a significant one against Aras. But, while Autodesk PLM 360 is still more suitable for small to medium businesses (SMBs), Aras can support complex and customized needs. Item-based and process-oriented, Aras VPLM is designed for the most demanding and complex PLM Read More

The Many Faces of PLM Part One: Event Summary

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software solutions, like many of the application suites that have come before it, are a collection of different offerings that serve a common theme and contribute to overlapping value propositions. Like previous application suites, there is strategic value in approaching PLM as a set of inter-related requirements as opposed to just a collection of function-specific requirements. This is a report on the observations from the 2003 Product Development Manager’s Association (PDMA) Conference.

pdm racing 240sx  other applications without a PDM foundation should not be called PLM. Regardless of the name, there are a lot of applications that can help to improve the management of products - and therefore provide a path to the benefits that are currently associated with PLM. Perhaps a new term for the more diverse solution set is Extended PLM . Whether this name is correct or not, it is clear that PDM is a major component in achieving value. PDM has come a long way in the past few years. Collaborative processes Read More

Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Summarizing PTC’s Decades of Fervent In-House Innovation (and Acquisitions) - Part 3

Part 1 of this blog series introduced Needham, Massachusetts (US)-based Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC, NASDAQ: PMTC), which is an over US$1-billion large software company that develops, markets, and supports product development software solutions and related services. My post analyzed the company’s genesis from its inception in 1985 through the mid 2000s. Part 2 then analyzed the most

PTC has a presence in most major discrete manufacturing industries, primarily from a design CAD and PDM (i.e., product authoring and content sharing and management) standpoint, and for enterprise-wide collaborative design. More recently the vendor has tackled  project and product portfolio management (PPM)  and customer needs management. In addition to a strong PLM foundation with its Windchill technology and a Read More

Fighting Back: How Product Data Management Can Give You the Competitive Edge

Canadian manufacturers are getting squeezed. Challenged by a rising Canadian dollar, forced to hold the line on prices in the US market, pressured by customer demand for lower prices, better quality, and quicker service, these manufacturers need a way to retain their competitive edge and increase bottom-line profitability. Find out why product data management (PDM) is a solution you can turn to in these challenging times.

pdm racing 240sx  Working with a disparate PDM system, where various aspects of the product design are scattered throughout the enterprise, is one of the leading contributors to a slower production cycle-and one that will surely impact the business's bottom line. In order to effectively share design data and promote collaboration, a PDM solution that includes copy-design functionality-as well as other features that enhance product design reuse-should be considered. Generally speaking, PDM solutions can be tightly Read More

Process Manufacturers: Are You Running the Wrong Type of ERP Software? [SURVEY]

Take the survey now! Or read on to find out why we're talking about this.* In his article Process Manufacturing Software: A Primer, TEC author Joe Strub explains the difference between process and discrete manufacturing with an example: Once you make a can of soda, you cannot return it back to its basic components such as carbonated water, citric acid, potassium benzoate, aspartame

CAD-centric PLM, ERP-centric PLM, and Organic PLM: What's Right for You? - Part 3

Part 1 of this blog series started with the assertion that product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions are becoming increasingly important to enterprises in a strategic sense. However, not all PLM products are created equal, especially in light of their different origins. I then explored the advantages and weaknesses of the first group of PLM solutions: those coming from stalwart

pdm racing 240sx  such as the numerous PDM and ERP systems that a company may already have around the world. These two PLM vendors have approached their technology platform as a loosely coupled set of services, and their approach is not monolithic. The idea is for companies to use what they need, federate to legacy systems, leverage their existing investments, and achieve greater functionality and more flexibility. These vendors layer more specific PLM processes (e.g., supplier compliance, mechanical parts, electronic Read More

Is MAPICS Getting the Magic of PLM? Part Two: Strategy

pdm racing 240sx  of the designer's intent, PDM systems were originally developed as merely vaults for storing and updating data, which replace paper-based processes and information storage with a single, centralized data repository that enables authorized users throughout a company to access and update current product information, while ensuring they follow specific procedures. On the other hand, PLM, which is an overarching strategy (concept) of guiding the product throughout its entire life cycle, entails much more Read More
