Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

Siemens PLM Analyst Conference 2014—Blending Virtual and Real Worlds—Part Two

Last week on the TEC blog, TEC's P.J. Jakovljevic looked at the main themes of the Siemens PLM Conference 2014 he recently attended, including Siemens’ “realize innovation” strategy. Here are his thoughts regarding the rest of the conference, with a look at what’s new with “catalysts” and Teamcenter, and what else can be expected from the product lifecycle management (PLM) vendor in 2014 and beyond.

expert  All of Siemens’ industry expert presenters exuded knowledge, and certainly in shipyard, automotive, A&D, etc., the vendor is the leader. Shipbuilding, for example, had the first catalyst among all industries, and there are five process pillars currently: ship design and engineering; shipbuilding program and product management; supply chain management; digital ship construction; and ship service and support. But I think that in the footwear vertical it is still behind PTC, TradeStone Software, Lectra, Read More

TEC Vendor Note: Lectra, A Focused PLM Player

A brief introduction to Lectra, a specialized vendor in the CAD, CAM, and PLM industry, including history, product offerings, and achievements, as well as expectations and recommendations to the vendor’s future growth.

expert  fashion collaborative solutions, fashion-specific expertise is a critical differentiator between Lectra and many of its competitors with shorter presence in the fashion PLM market. As a software and equipment provider purely dealing with soft materials, Lectra may not be quite effective at managing both soft-line and hard-line products at the same time if a customer needs to do so. However, soft-line along should give Lectra enough opportunity to grow. Organic integration between CAD/CAM and its Read More

Can ERP Speak PLM?

Because product lifecycle management (PLM) offers a host of benefits to manufacturers, it has become one of the fastest growing categories of enterprise applications. But a PLM system needs to work hand-in-hand with an enterprise resource planning system, so how can an organization integrate these two enterprise applications, which "speak" in different languages?
