Dassault Systèmes-Expanding Product Development and the 3D Experience

The Dassault Systèmes vision is to enable everyone—from product designers, engineers, and suppliers to end users and their respective communities—to create, share, and experience the three-dimensional virtual world, thereby maximizing the value of their intellectual property and digital assets. In this article, TEC principal analyst P.J. Jakovljevic reports on the 3D design tools he recently saw demoed, how they enable collaboration, and their application to manufacturing and other sectors.

catia v6r2011  , design tools from CATIA and SolidWorks , product simulation and testing application SIMULIA, and ENOVIA PLM products ( MatrixOne , SmarTeam , Enginuity , and VPLM ), the vendor has all the necessary pieces to round out its PLM footprint. Dassault Systèmes software applications allow businesses to digitally define and simulate products, as well as the processes and resources required to manufacture, maintain, and recycle them while minimizing their impact on the environment. Aras Announces VPLM for Autodesk Vault

A week before the Autodesk University 2012 conference, Aras, a provider of enterprise-class open source product lifecycle management (PLM) software solutions, announced the launch of Aras VPLM, a commercial offering designed specifically for companies that run Autodesk Vault with Inventor for three-dimensional product design and AutoCAD for two-dimensional design. Aras VPLM for Autodesk Vault

What’s New in the World of Design Components and Kernels?

Those folks that follow the 3D and 2D computer aided design (CAD) space are aware that all major design, manufacturing, and engineering software products are based on geometry modeling kernels and a variety of other development components. Spatial Corp., a Dassault Systèmes subsidiary, is one prominent provider of 3D development software components for technical applications across a broad range

(which was acquired by Dassault Systèmes in 2000). Most recently, Spatial Corp. joined Geometric Limited in announcing Geometric DFX , a standalone application for carrying out the DFX validation of product designs. Geometric describes DFX as “Design for X” where X represents various downstream process checks related to design goals such as Read More

PTC Creo 3.0—CAD Interoperability

CAD software is changing to make data reusable and collaboratively shared in the customer/supplier’s native format (most commonly 3D CAD formats). At the forefront of these changes is product development software player PTC, and the company’s 3D product design solution Creo, now on its third version, which offers powerful CAD interoperability and design and efficiency improvements.

catia v6r2011  able to import SolidWorks, CATIA , NX , Solid Edge , and Autodesk Inventor files directly in PTC Creo without the need for additional software (Figure 2).   However, Unite technology supports users and organizations to “open” SolidWorks, Catia, and NX files directly in PTC Creo and to maintain them in their original format. There is no conversion required, and the files can be used as if they were native to PTC Creo. There are also no new business objects created that need to be managed.   These Read More

Shifts in Payment Models for CAD Deployments

Given the recent desktop virtualization move for PTC Creo, it will be interesting to watch whether PTC will start offering subscriptions for some Creo apps (and Dassault Systèmes for SolidWorks). This is especially interesting in light of the recent move of Siemens Solid Edge to subscription licensing, and also since Autodesk is now offering its desktop and other design products on a pay-as-you-go

catia v6r2011  mid-market category, and Dassault CATIA, Siemens NX , and PTC Creo Parametric (formerly Pro/E ) in the large enterprise category. For the latter, I don’t see subscription or cloud models coming any time soon. The reason for Autodesk to do pay-as-you-go is that it fits with the vendor’s overall strategy in how it targets professional (and even consumer) users. The reason for Solid Edge to do so is that it is still a smaller player trying to catch up with SolidWorks’ market share. For its part, Read More

ECAD/MCAD Collaboration Solutions: Integrating Mechanical and Electrical Product Design

Electro-mechanical design continues to gain importance, as the majority of today’s products have both electrical and mechanical components and systems. Designing and stimulating these products collaboratively across both domains is essential to producing high quality products. Learn how implementing an electro-computer-aided design (ECAD) and mechanical computer-aided design (MCAD) strategy—now—can help you later.

Siemens PLM Analyst Conference 2014—Blending Virtual and Real Worlds—Part Two

Last week on the TEC blog, TEC's P.J. Jakovljevic looked at the main themes of the Siemens PLM Conference 2014 he recently attended, including Siemens’ “realize innovation” strategy. Here are his thoughts regarding the rest of the conference, with a look at what’s new with “catalysts” and Teamcenter, and what else can be expected from the product lifecycle management (PLM) vendor in 2014 and beyond.

Such coups are rare at that level, and CATIA continues to grow in double digits, but most likely by finding new CAD customers in industries where NX and Creo are not that active, e.g., fashion, architecture, composite materials, etc. NX and Tecnomatix users should soon benefit from the capabilities coming from LMS mechatronic simulation, Kineo robotic path optimization, and even some third-party solutions (e.g., Bentley Systems ’ point clouds).   This year the Read More

Autodesk Ushers In the Era of Cloud CAM

As manufacturing is one of the major growth opportunities for Autodesk, during the recent Autodesk University 2013 conference the vendor unveiled Autodesk CAM 360 , the industry’s first cloud-based solution for computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), based on the 2012 acquisition of HSMWorks Apps. By leveraging the cloud, CAM 360 allows users to take advantage of collaboration tools and shared data storage, and provides users with ease of use and flexibility.

PTC has Creo 3D CAM extensions, which, as relatively new solution, have yet to prove themselves in the market.   Cloud Digital Manufacturing—The Next Frontier?   Siemens Tecnomatix and Dassault Systemes DELMIA are the digital manufacturing software category leaders. With these solutions the final object is a finished product, meaning the focus is on how to plan and Read More

Dassault’s Consumer Experience Management, Virtually Yours

Product lifecycle management (PLM) for retail and consumer packaged goods (CPG) is usually seen as a lighter version of more complex systems used by manufacturing companies to design sophisticated industrial products. Dassault Systèmes is one of the few vendors to offer PLM solutions that specifically address customer experience in retail. In this article, TEC analyst Gabriel Gheorghiu shows you how retailers can use the Dassault Systèmes solution for customer experience.

All these tools can be used in various combinations, but the ultimate goal is for retailers to create and manage, via simulations, the experiences customers will have in their retail interactions. But Dassault Systèmes approaches the customer experience from a wide angle, offering Read More

Social PLM and CRM - Dassault Systèmes and Netvibes (Under the Exalead Brand)

The voice of the customer (VOC) concept has been around for decades, but the Internet and social media technologies have finally enabled it to its fullest degree. We have all heard of (and perhaps even contributed to) customers venting their anger or expressing their delight with some vendor’s service or some product’s characteristics and performance via online forums. A company’s ability to

catia v6r2011  brands and applications (i.e., CATIA, SIMULIA, DELMIA , and ENOVIA ) are based on a single data model through the company’s Virtual Product Management (VPM) engine. Product Design of the Future While competitors and pundits will point out to the inevitable issue of connectivity and backward compatibility (indeed, at most larger companies there are hodgepodges of PLM and CAD systems), Dassault Systèmes believes that 3-D lifelike experience represents how product design will be (and should be) done in Read More
