Confessions of a Techno Junkie
Ideas on how to survive the avalanche of technology, avoid the lure of its pitfalls, and succeed with it as the enabler to true process innovation.

arena junkies  let's leap to the arena of corporate technology acquisition and discuss any parallels. Without the benefit of scientific analysis, most of us would probably agree that businesses do an equally poor job of purchasing and assimilating technology into the workplace to achieve intended benefits. We all have war stories of failed software and hardware implementations, and significant technology investments gone awry. Early in my career, I once worked for a company where we sadly joked that we owned more

Ariba Goes Vertical: No Pain, Much Gain

Ariba, a leader in E-procurement software and market management, pays $1.86 billion in stock to acquire TRADEX, a vendor of software that lets its customers build their own Internet marketplaces.

arena junkies  into the incredibly fertile arena of vertical markets. The acquisition of TRADEX lets it do that without the pain of developing sophisticated user-level software. At the same time, Ariba acquires some strong assets from TRADEX's toolkit, especially its workflow engine. We see this move opening new markets for Ariba's marketplace activities. For every industry in which a vertical market offers specialized products, there is still a need for the same old cleaning supplies, copy paper and carpet protectors. Read More

Supply Chain in 2013

Everyone waits, as we go to press, to see how domestic political forces will impact the U.S. business climate right from the 2013 get-go. If ever “waiting with bated breath” was a relevant turn of phrase, it is probably now. While both the near-term U.S. fiscal policies and the ongoing debt crisis in Europe will strongly influence the outlook for 2013, the further removed we are from the depths

arena junkies  into the supply chain arena has been ongoing. We foresee 2013 as something of a watershed year here, with cloud and software as a service (SaaS) becoming an ever greater differentiating capability for some specific SCM segments. SaaS will also become an even more heavily weighted evaluation criteria for more companies in 2013. S&OP will get much greater focus by more companies in 2013. As companies, tired from (or fearful of more) cost-cutting, look more closely at market-responsive strategies, they Read More

Case Study: Air International US

Since 1996, Air International US (AIUS) has used an outsourced manufacturing strategy instead of maintaining its own facilities. Merant Goes South on the Stock Market

Another vendor has stated that growth and license revenues in the mainframe arena are softer than expected. Shares of Merant (NASDAQ: MRNT), the provider of PVCS, a major software configuration management product (acquired from Intersolv), in addition to other software, have dropped more than 24 percent after the company released preliminary financial estimates for its first fiscal quarter recently-ended, showing revenues likely will be about 17 percent less than the previous year due to a decline in COBOL license fees.

arena junkies  revenues in the mainframe arena are softer than expected (see System Suppliers Slip Seriously , August 8, 2000 for further details on other vendors in the same boat.) It is not surprising that COBOL revenues have begun to decline, given the end of the Y2K crisis. PVCS has long been a strong candidate for software developers in need of version management and software build control. It will continue to be strong in this space, irrespective of its current stock market woes, although it may become a Read More

What’s Your Reason for Not Using SaaS PLM?

Without a doubt, software-as-a-service (SaaS) as a software delivery model has become a hot topic in the enterprise software field and has gained some noticeable shares in sectors such as customer relationship management (CRM). On the other hand, the product lifecycle management (PLM) industry has seen increasing awareness of SaaS. Oleg Shilovitsky, t

arena junkies  are very few options— Arena and PLM+ , which serve users in the engineering world, and a few more solutions (e.g., Yunique PLM and Zweave ) which focus on fashion, consumer packaged goods (CPG), and so on. I can’t confirm that the above mentioned solutions all meet the SaaS definition considering that some may argue that SaaS has to be multi-tenant. However, these solutions are the closest to SaaS PLM even if some of them may not yet be multi-tenant. Will SaaS Be a Strong Delivery Model for PLM? Yes Read More

Case Study: Western Electronics

As a contract manufacturer, Western Electronics makes assemblies for its customers. This translates into a huge volume of data being exchanged—and an exponentially greater number of engineering changes to manage. The company was challenged to take control over its processes—especially bill of materials (BOM) management—and lead its customers into following best practices. With its new change management solution, the company is confident it has an accurate history and the latest revisions.

Where Does PLM Fit in the Extending LMS Formula?

There are two reasons which led me to write this blog. Firstly, I recently had briefings with vendors such as Learn.com and Xyleme that made me realize that the learning management system (LMS) industry is building up more and more connections with other technologies and enterprise applications. Secondly, a recent article (see Trends in LMS by Don McIntosh) explains how LMS is evolving with Web 2

arena junkies  models in the learning arena seems like a no-brainer to me. Whether it’s a technician who needs to replace a part hidden deep within a complicated piece of equipment, or a soldier who needs to detonate a land mine ( see Canadian Armed Forces Use 3D for Training Under Fire ), intuitive 3D instructions can be highly valuable in saving time—or even lives. In manufacturing, 3D computer-aided design (CAD) has long been used. The existing 3D CAD assets have the potential to be used for learning purposes, Read More
