CAD Model Quality Testing
With 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) models taking on a broader and more significant role in the development of new products, CAD files must flow smoothly into downstream applications. Sometimes, however, errors do occur. An off-the-shelf software tool can detect problems in the design stage so they aren’t discovered at a crucial moment in the manufacturing process, when it may be costly—or even too late—to correct them.

Shifts in Payment Models for CAD Deployments » The TEC Blog
In terms of comparing 3D computer-aided design (CAD) offerings, one can put SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor , Solid Edge, and even PTC CoCreate (now Creo/Elements Direct ) in the mid-market category, and Dassault CATIA, Siemens NX , and PTC Creo Parametric (formerly Pro/E ) in the large enterprise category. For the latter, I don’t see subscription or cloud models coming any time soon. The reason for Autodesk to do pay-as-you-go is that it fits with the vendor’s overall strategy in how it targets

Best-of-Breed Versus Complete CAD-PLM Suites: The Debate Rages On
The PLM world is currently witness to fervent debate on the most appropriate type of PLM/CAD software. Best-of-breed solutions offer the needed capabilities and hence integrate the necessary software modules as per the customer’s needs, whereas all-in-one CAD/PLM suites attempt a “one size fits all” approach. In his report, TEC principal analyst P.J. Jakovljevic provides his view on the intricacies of these two approaches.

HD-PLM, Exalead, and Project Lightning, What Do They Have in Common? » The TEC Blog
How come CAD or 3D is important to all the PLM vendors? What happened to PDM or Enterprise PDM? I wonder what’s up with SAP and Oracle. Some points to ponder. Kurt Chen on 6 July, 2010 at 4:36 pm # Hi SwanPLM, To me, introducing new ways of working, acquiring key technologies in the future, and leveraging existing assets for better use are all innovative. CAD is important to PLM if we take the “P” as tangible products requiring discrete manufacturing processes. PDM is still alive, and as I wrote in

Should SAP Buy PTC? » The TEC Blog
Right Hemisphere’s 2D and 3D viewing and publishing capability had  been deployed for SAP PLM 7.0. According to SAP, markup will also be available in a near release SAP PLM 7.1. Will all these integration efforts be enough? Not for everyone, but probably a good portion of customers will say yes. Another worry about the acquisition is knowledge integration. SAP has been very successful in transactional processes. It might be overwhelmed by the richness of the product knowledge domain if it acquires
